Greenwich Peninsula, London
Project Description
Civic Trust Award 2002 - Outstanding Contribution to the Quality and Appearance of the Environment BALI National Award Winner 2000 - Land Renewal
English Landscapes has completed the majority of the landscaping works at Greenwich Peninsula, the site of the Millennium Dome. The site was the subject of major decontamination and remedial works to turn derelict land into valuable development land and public open space.
English Landscapes entered into a partnering style agreement with Edmund Nuttall Ltd at Greenwich. Although this was not a formal arrangement the ethos was to undertake the works as partners. We undertook all the budgetary profiling for the landscape and associated works working with Nuttalls, and together we developed an open relationship with the designers and English Partnerships.
English Landscapes became an integral part of the management team attending the client meetings and providing solutions to design problems. This relationship proved invaluable in helping the client to achieve the most cost effective high quality scheme possible.
The works undertaken included:
Construction of 250 metres of oak boardwalk around a series of lagoons surrounded by wild flower seeding and reinforced grass Planting of a series of tidal ecological terraces and rock pools with native plant species, over 50,000 acquatic/marginals and 35,000 willows and grasses Transplanting of local soils, rocks, and flora Planting of considerable areas of ornamental landscaping Planting of over 3,500 advanced nursery stock, 60,000 shrubs and semi-mature trees Laying of 20,000 square metres of turf Installation of an automatic watering system providing the required irrigation to the majority of planted areas on the site
A three-year maintenance period followed practical completion
