English Landscapes has won five National Landscape Awards at this year’s BALI Ceremony held at the London Hilton, Park Lane. This event has grown over the years, since it was first introduced in 1976, to become the largest and most prestigious in the industry, attracting interest from across the world.
This year’s 125 entries delighted the judges and exceeded the standards set from last year; a sure indication of the commitment of the designers and contractors taking part to steadily improve upon the quality of their work and for BALI to remain resolute in its determination to reward only the best of the best.
Categories continue to demonstrate the many skill sets required of landscape professionals and English Landscapes’ awards cover the full range from hard landscaping and land renewal through grounds maintenance to the Best Use of Lighting.
English Landscapes' winning schemes were:
Booths Hall Park, Knutsford. Winner of a National Award for Mainly Hard Landscaping (construction cost over £100,000. The client brief here was to remodel the space between the two restored existing 1970’s buildings and the Georgian Manor, and to link them to the listed 18th century parkland. Communal courtyards were constructed encompassing natural stone feature walls, together with walkways and a stepped water cascade. Soft landscaping included an avenue of extra heavy trees and ornamental planting. The judges commented on the good quality of the hard landscaping throughout the scheme.
Olive Gardens, Liverpool. Winner of a National Award for Land Renewal. This scheme saw the renewal of a derelict site to provide an attractive linear park for a new housing development. Emphasis was placed on passive recreation including community gardens and quiet spaces for contemplation, whilst providing the opportunity for incidental small scale play for younger children. The full remit of landscaping skills has been covered, including earthworks, footpaths, high quality paving, planting and construction of play areas.
Coventry City Centre, Coventry. Winner of a National Award for Grounds Maintenance of Public Grounds. English Landscapes has been cleaning and greening Coventry City Centre since September 1999 and operates what can only be called a true partnership with its client CV One Limited. Working together, Coventry City Centre is now the cleanest and tidiest in the country with a string of Britain in Bloom Awards underpinning the continuous improvements made to the service provided.
Blackpool Central Corridor, Blackpool. Winner of a National Award for Grounds Maintenance of Public Grounds. This urban park, the first in Blackpool for over 50 years, has been maintained by English Landscapes since 2006. In 2005 English Landscapes was awarded the landscape contract, in conjunction with Volker Stevin, to create the park itself, and in fact last year won a BALI Special Award for the use of Recycled Materials for the extensive recycling of existing site material here.
Municipal Square, Crewe. Winner of a National Award for the Best Use of Lighting. The lighting scheme has played a key role in the urban enhancement package for this contract. It has been used to showcase the war memorial and to create a safe, inviting night-time ambience. The lighting design utilises a range of colour temperatures to define a lighting hierarchy and allow perimeter treatments to knit into the surrounding area.
Mark Oliver, Managing Director of English Landscapes said ‘we are delighted to have picked up five awards over a diverse range of categories, bringing our total national awards to almost forty in the last decade. English Landscapes aims to provide a fully integrated service to its clients, offering the full spectrum of landscaping disciplines and we continue to demonstrate our commitment to the quality of our work by the receipt of these industry awards.’
