English Landscapes Wins A Silver-Gilt Award for its Carbon Neutral Garden at Tatton Park 2007
English Landscapes and TEP have scooped a Silver Gilt Award for their ‘Carbon Neutral’ Show Garden at the RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park this year. The Garden sponsored by the Northwest Regional Development Agency was designed by TEP with construction undertaken by English Landscapes, who were also involved in early contractor planning.

The concept at the centre of the garden is the carbon cycle and the garden aims to demonstrate the principle of carbon neutrality through its creation.

The garden’s design is based on the carbon cycle and features a shelter, which represents the earth’s atmosphere. Reclaimed timber has been used in the garden together with limestone and seashells, which are all particularly good at storing carbon. The planting has been chosen for its robustness and varying textures, with a colour palette covering the spectrum from whites to cool blues, deep reds and greens.

Once the show closes, it is intended that the garden will be re-created at the Solaris Centre in Blackpool. The Solaris Centre is the first major Blackpool Council building to integrate a high level of energy-efficient features in its design - a very apt destination for the Carbon Neutral Garden.

Charlotte Read, Senior Landscape Architect at TEP said ‘As designers, it has been an enjoyable and challenging theme to explore. We are delighted with the result and the ideas that visitors to the show are taking home with them. English Landscapes’ support has been invaluable, particularly the way in which they have embraced the theme through their management of the construction on site’.

Lee Webster, Area Manager said ‘English Landscapes has been successfully managing the environment since 1919 and is committed to reducing any adverse impact on it. We have always successfully practiced working in ways that are sustainable and consider ourselves to be one of the leaders in the green industry. Working with TEP on The Carbon Neutral Garden underlines our ongoing investment to sustainable construction in the landscaping industry.'
